hey, what’s class like?

go look!

in this 2hr~ wheelthrowing session, you'll (more than likely) make two bowls or cups on the potter’s wheel and add decoration (if you’d like) with stamps and texture tools. you’ll pick your favorite one to keep.

you’ll learn all the steps in the initial process of wheelthrowing — from correct posture and position of your hands with or without tools, how to achieve slow, steady movement, and how to course-correct when things go wonky (because they will). we’ll also explain the physical science at work to help inform your learning here.

also if you just want to get dirty and muck about because you haven’t gotten messy like this since you were a kid, that’s totally fine. we are simple clay nerds who can also read the room and won’t info dump unless you ask us to.

after class, we’ll finish your pieces with your choice of glaze and have them ready to pick up within 4-6 weeks of class :-)

see all the details

all the lovely little details

here’s what to expect:

what you’ll make:

some beautiful pots with a whole lot of personality!

you’ll get all the clay you need to create a one-of-a-kind vessel. in your first class you can generally expect to make planters, small bowls and short cups.
throwing can be a bit of a challenge, so come prepared to make a few mistakes ❀ we promise we’ll be patient with you the whole way through.

where you’ll make it:

this is an outdoor class in a certified wildlife habitat. the garden is filled with butterflies, bees and other pollinators, lizards, frogs, birds, one cat, one dog, and a couple humans :-)

come expecting flora, fauna, and general #florida phenomena! we do suggest wearing long pants and closed-toe shoes for the best experience.

SUMMER SEASON: heat is, of course a factor, but we have lots of trees surrounding us, so temps are cooler than you might expect (usually about 5-10 degrees cooler than on the street). in the case of thunderstorms, we’ll refund/reschedule for another day.

what you’ll keep:

you’ll get to keep your favorite piece!

just try not to get attached ❀ we wish it were different (trust) but we can’t always guarantee all of your pottery will make it through the firing process fully intact (i.e., your bowl is a planter post-firing)
we’ll warn you if we think a piece might be limited to the present moment; we’ll help you fix it if we can.

how we’ll glaze it:

we’ll coat your pieces in a glaze of your choice (white, clear or green) and fire them asap!

✔all pieces are microwave/dishwasher friendly and food-safe once finished

when you’ll pick up your work:

generally we’ll have pots ready for you within six weeks of class. this is a ~process~ that includes drying time, two firings, glazing, etc.

we really appreciate your patience as there will be a short wait! we hope that is okay ❀

pick up hours:

sundays/wednesdays 12-6pm

you’ll get a little contact card that has an estimated date for pick up, generally 6-8 weeks after class. if it’s earlier, we’ll text you!

once we’ve been in contact with you, we will store work for 30 days! feel free to text liza for an update.
life happens, just talk to us if you can’t get back to the studio in that time period and we will figure something out.
however
we don’t have a lot of storage space! please don’t wait to pick up your work.

almost forgot

good things to know

small classes, big learning

there are five seats available in each group wheel class — smaller classes allow us to take you through the whole process with more individual attention and care.

where to go when you get here:

you are there, we are here

once you’ve arrived, follow the gravel driveway to the sculpture at the wooden gate with a big lizard on it.

running late?

during group classes*, there is a 10 minute grace period for anyone running a few minutes behind. we’ll do our best to catch you up when you get here without interrupting the flow of class for other students.

please understand if you are too late to arrive, you miss out on a crucial portion of class — namely, how to set-up and operate the machine we’ll be using during your time at the studio.
that said, we lock the entrance 15 minutes after class starts for safety measures and to prevent classtime interruptions. no-shows are not entitled to a refund.

TL;DR: please don’t be late!

policies, cancellations, refunds

dress code? more like mess code

make sure to dress for a mess, not for dinner!!
lightweight long pants and closed-toe shoes are highly recommended during the summer months.

short nails pls!

short, unpolished fingernails are encouraged. you are going to have your hand inside of a spinning ball of soft clay — long nails and this process really don’t mix well.

for your own enjoyment, it’s HIGHLY RECOMMENDED you arrive with short nails.

don’t say i didn’t tell you twice ✹

private gatherings + parties, etc. 🎈

YES YOU CAN HAVE YOUR PARTY HERE!
if you’re booking for a group of 4 or more, we’ll close the class so it’s a private gathering for you and friends.
if there’s more than 6 in your group, we can do a wheel + handbuilding experience, or figure something special out at the sculpture table :-)
