hey, what’s class like?

go look!

in this 2hr~ wheelthrowing session, you'll (more than likely) make a set of bowls or cups on the potter’s wheel and add decoration (if you’d like) with stamps and texture tools.

you’ll learn all the steps in the initial process of wheelthrowing — from correct posture and position of your hands with or without tools, how to achieve slow, steady movement, and how to course-correct when things go wonky (because they will). we’ll also explain the physical science at work to help inform your learning here.

also if you just want to get dirty and muck about because you haven’t gotten messy like this since you were a kid, that’s totally fine. we are simple clay nerds who can also read the room and won’t info dump unless you ask us to.

after class, we’ll finish your pieces with your choice of glaze and have them ready to pick up within 4-6 weeks of class :-)

all the lovely little details

here’s what to expect:

what you’ll make:

some beautiful pots with a whole lot of personality!

you’ll get all the clay you need to create two pieces of pottery. in your first class you can generally expect to make planters, small bowls and short cups.
throwing can be a bit of a challenge, so come prepared to make a few mistakes ❤️ we promise we’ll be patient with you the whole way through.

where we’ll make it:

this is an outdoor class so come expecting flora, fauna, and general #florida phenomena!

we are in a shady area with lots of trees surrounding us, so temps are cooler than you might expect (usually about 5-6 degrees lower than on the street)
MAY-OCTOBER: with summer comes rain! if the weather is too severe to host class, we’ll reschedule at your convenience.

what you’ll keep:

you’ll get to keep your favorite 2 pieces!

just try not to get attached ❤️ we wish it were different (trust) but we can’t always guarantee all of your pottery will make it through the firing process fully intact.
we’ll warn you if we think a piece might be limited to the present moment; we’ll help you fix it if we can.

how we’ll glaze it:

we’ll coat your pieces in a glaze of your choice (white, matte clear or green) and fire them asap!

you can also schedule a glazing day with us where you’ll have access to a full range of colors.
✔️all pieces are microwave/dishwasher friendly and food-safe once finished

when you’ll pick up your work:

generally we’ll have pots ready for you within four weeks of class. this is a ~process~ that includes drying time, two firings, glazing, etc.

we really appreciate your patience as there will be a short wait! we hope that is okay ❤️

pick up hours:

SUN 10-2p / TUES/THURS 4-9pm

you’ll get a little contact card that has an estimated date for pick up, generally 4 weeks after class.

once we’ve been in contact with you, we will store work for 30 days! feel free to text liza for an update.
life happens, just talk to us if you can’t get back to the studio in that time period and we will figure something out.
we are happy to send it via uber courier (no shame, traffic sucks) at cost or $25 shipping/handling fee (inclusive of all shipping costs unless shipping internationally)
however… we don’t have a lot of storage space! please don’t wait to pick up your work.
if you need us to ship, just let us know at the start of class.

almost forgot…

good things to know

dress code? more like mess code…

make sure to dress for a mess, not for dinner!! and feel free to bring a change of clothes if you need to :-)

shorter nails*, lightweight long pants, and closed-toed shoes are highly recommended.
*seriously though, keep em short if you can ❤️✨💅

small classes, big learning

we can accomodate up to 6 people in our two-hr wheel classes. smaller classes allow us to take you through the whole process with more attention and care.

more than six? we can figure something special out at the sculpture table :-)

where to go when you get here:

you are there, we are here

once you’ve arrived, follow the gravel driveway to the sculpture at the wooden gate with a big lizard on it.

BYOB BABY

WE HAVE STARFRUIT AVAILABLE IF YOU WANT SOME!

you’re also welcome to bring whatever makes you and your friends comfortable — food, booze, etc… 🗣️🌿

we’ll have flat + fizzy water available for ya, too ✨

yo, teach!

hey hi i’m liza nice to meet ya!

(e)liza quinn furr is a lifelong floridian, multidisciplinary artist and lizard lover with a decade-long relationship with clay. she began making pots and throwing on the wheel in 2014 while studying at the university of north florida, where she earned a B.A. in sociology with a minor in ceramic arts. she taught at several art studios and museums throughout broward county before launching dirty lizard studio in august 2023.

liza usually pinches and coils clay into everyday objects (talking about a real form-and-function type of person) but occasionally can be found hopping on the wheel when she’s looking for a little excitement.

a little dirt never did you wrong
