foundations (of a coil pot)

an introduction to the most ancient way there is.

over four weeks, you’ll learn how to:

  1. wedge, roll coils and pinch clay into an even-walled planter
  2. shape and paddle clay into a taller 10-12” tall, historically inspired vase (vás?)
  3. get creative with methods and make a set of footed goblets or mugs.
  4. how to glaze and decorate using slips and underglaze

drop-ins are welcome every 1st and 3rd week of the month.

mixed-level, beginner-oriented

coiling 101 is open to all beginners and intermediate students who need a refresher

weekend workshops sway towards intermediate and advanced students; generally meant for students with at least six months to a year or more of previous experience.

what’s class like?

in handbuilding classes, students will make taller, more complex forms using age-old techniques and learn various ways to decorate using contemporary techniques.

we’ll mostly be employing the coil and pinch method of building, but other techniques will come into play.

this is a more straightforward approach to making functional objects without the use of the potter’s wheel. you can easily adjust your projects based on your desires. come with inspiration! we’ll look mostly to historical pots, so your vessel could be a basic vase, a sculptural vás, a wide and open piece for ikebana flower arrangements… options are endless.

students will walk away with a better understanding building larger vessels and new ideas for decorating 3D objects.

what to expect in handbuilding class

what you’ll make:

we’ll focus on different shapes, techniques or forms in each class, so it’s always a little different. you’ll walk away knowing how to create mugs, bowls, cups, vases, etc.

if you’re just starting out, it’s encouraged to start with coiling 101. this will give you the basics you need to make larger, more complex and intricate pieces.

we can make anything at the table. bring any ideas you might have.

where we’ll make it:

classes occur outdoors under cover.

expect flora, fauna, and general #florida phenomena. make sure to dress for a mess and the weather - long pants and/or closed toed shoes are recommended.

how we’ll glaze it:

you can choose a glaze and we’ll finish your pieces for you or you can schedule with us separately.

if you’re thinking you’d like to take multiple sessions, DIY glazing options are including and you can come back go the studio to glaze your work when you’re ready.

when you’ll get it:

pieces take approximately 3-6 weeks to move through the firing process. we’ll be in touch when work is ready, but feel free to contact us for an update.

are all materials provided?

for single session riders, cost includes clay, glaze, and firing for your work ❤️

if you’re thinking you’d like to take multiple sessions, youll get extra clay to practice with during the week. DIY glazing options are included, so you can come back go the studio to glaze your work when you’re ready.
