foundations (of a coil pot)
an introduction to the most ancient way there is.
over four weeks, you’ll learn how to:
- wedge, roll coils and pinch clay into an even-walled planter
- shape and paddle clay into a taller 10-12” tall, historically inspired vase (vás?)
- get creative with methods and make a set of footed goblets or mugs.
- how to glaze and decorate using slips and underglaze
drop-ins are welcome every 1st and 3rd week of the month.

weekend workshops sway towards intermediate and advanced students; generally meant for students with at least six months to a year or more of previous experience.
what’s class like?
what’s class like?
in handbuilding classes, students will make taller, more complex forms using age-old techniques and learn various ways to decorate using contemporary techniques.
we’ll mostly be employing the coil and pinch method of building, but other techniques will come into play.
this is a more straightforward approach to making functional objects without the use of the potter’s wheel. you can easily adjust your projects based on your desires. come with inspiration! we’ll look mostly to historical pots, so your vessel could be a basic vase, a sculptural vás, a wide and open piece for ikebana flower arrangements… options are endless.
students will walk away with a better understanding building larger vessels and new ideas for decorating 3D objects.

we’ll focus on different shapes, techniques or forms in each class, so it’s always a little different. you’ll walk away knowing how to create mugs, bowls, cups, vases, etc.
