tuesday night handbuilding

tuesday night handbuilding

use flat slabs, coiled clay and a lil bit of mud to create interesting works of art, without the use of the potter’s wheel.

all materials included

class starts at 6:45 on tuesday nights ✨

$222 / four week session or $75/class

mixed-level, beginner-oriented

no experience required for session 1.

session 2 does ask for a little experience! we will build on skills learned during session 1 classes.

what’s class like?

come with an open, creative mind, walk away with a deeper understanding of clay through coiling, pinching, and slab-building the vessel — cups, bowls, bottles, pitchers, etc.

in handbuilding class, beginning and intermediate students alike will make taller, sometimes complex forms using age-old techniques. we’ll mostly be employing the coil and pinch method of building, but other techniques will come into play.

this is a more straightforward approach to making functional objects without the use of the potter’s wheel. you can easily adjust your projects based on your desires.

what to expect in handbuilding class

what you’ll make:

we’ll focus on coil, pinch, or slab methods of building in class. different shapes, techniques or forms will be the focus each time so it’s always a little different.

if you’re just starting out, one class will give you the basics you need to make a small cup / mug (around 6” tall) or shallow bowl (or dish, of some sort). extended classes allow for larger pieces 🎉 as you’ll get more accustomed to working with clay over time.

the pacing of this class is relaxed and open to all levels of experience. we can make anything at the table. bring any ideas you might have.

where we’ll make it:

classes occur outdoors under cover.

expect flora, fauna, and general #florida phenomena. make sure to dress for a mess and the weather - long pants and/or closed toed shoes are recommended.

how we’ll glaze it:

you can choose a glaze and we’ll finish your pieces for you or you can schedule with us separately.

if you’re thinking you’d like to take multiple sessions, DIY glazing options are including and you can come back go the studio to glaze your work when you’re ready.

when you’ll get it:

pieces take approximately 3-6 weeks to move through the firing process. we’ll be in touch when work is ready, but feel free to contact us for an update.

are all materials provided?

for single session riders, cost includes clay and firing for your work ❤️ glazing is not included in the cost for these classes, but you can schedule a day to glaze here

if you’re thinking you’d like to take multiple sessions, youll get extra clay to practice with during the week. DIY glazing options are included, so you can come back go the studio to glaze your work when you’re ready.
